Felicity Taylor specialises in children’s picture book illustration, she finds it incredibly exciting that by turning each page a new scene and narrative develop. This page turning motion brings both the illustrations and narrative to life for her.

She uses a combination of line and collage, incorporating different dimensions such as scale and space to bring them into focus. The use of collage enables her to add different layers of meanings into the illustrations.
Blank backgrounds and odd details are often used to hint at hidden meanings. This use of negative space makes the reader observe the oddities of her illustrations, requiring them to question the visual clues in the narrative. In essence these visual clues and questions enable the viewers to contemplate and explore the narrative and illustrations long after they have put the book down.

Taylor’s illustrations are heavily influenced by her own life, contemporary culture and her reactions to it. She deals predominantly with taboo subject matter within these picture books, such as death and divorce. Though these subjects are not considered to be child friendly they do unfortunately affect children, and her picture books aim to address these issues in an accessible manor. Taboo subjects bring their own difficulties, and the illustrator has to consider carefully to what extent to make use of information and metaphorical language.
