Cheryl Howard

Collage is my visual language. It carries with it the baggage of existing signifiers, this in hand is a viable way to create juxtaposition within my images.
My artworks are instigated by imbalances, inequalities and oppressive themes in our contemporary society. Subject matter, often dealing with adult themes, tend to add gravity and darker innuendos to seemingly delicate imagery.

Female suppression tends to be a pattern within my artwork, so the use of fabric and doilies as texture including lace and ribbons, assist in the representation of the topic, married up with negative space or opposing objects to create a discomfort for the viewer.

I love and collect magazines and fabrics, especially when not from this time. I am drawn to the Victorian era as well as the 50’s, resulting in a nostalgic and often aged look.
